IBM’s 5 in 5–Giving Senses To Computers

‘”5 in 5”, does it make any sense? No??. Actually it gives sense. Recently IBM announced the future of cognitive computing, i.e. equipping computers/smart-phones with 5 senses with in 5 years from now. In short 5 in 5. Those 5 senses were obviously

  1. Sight
  2. Touch
  3. Hearing
  4. Smell
  5. Taste

What would happen if the computers can sense the above in future? No this is not the right question we have to ask here. In today’s world, with the plethora of sensors capable of reading ample parameters in almost all areas found by human, sensing things are not an exciting one to hear. So what IBM is going to concentrate here is processing the senses, that is ‘cognition to computers’. Without a brain, all the things sensed through our five sensory organs are utterly a futile chemical reactions over our nerves. It’s equivalent to a person in coma.

So sensing needs ‘cognition’, that paves way to ‘Recognition’. Here recognition for computers is achieved by processing the sensed things, that may be sight or touch or any of the other senses stated above, and yes this includes all probability of combinations. Here is the quote from Bernard Meyerson’s (Chief Innovation Officer, IBM) article, which I feel conveys the goal of “5 in 5” better.

Today, if you put a robotic track inspector in a railroad tunnel and equipped it with a video camera, it would not know what to make of an oncoming train. But what if you enabled it to sense things more like  humans do–not just vision from the video camera but the ability to detect the rumble of the train and the whoosh of air? And what if you enabled it to draw inferences from the evidence that it observes, hears and feels? That would be one smart computer–a machine that would be able to get out of the way before the train smashed into it.

The action of moving away from the track if train comes is triggered by the result of intelligence. Intelligence is the ability of acquiring and applying knowledge. Certainly it is not possible to fill in computer’s memory with billions of lines of code, in order to load the knowledge for all situations and conditions that are not predictable at the time of coding.

When we talk about giving senses and brain like human to computers, then the same paradigm should be followed for imparting knowledge to computer. That’s ‘Artificial Intelligence’, learning from past, learning from mistakes, learning from success, and it should learn till its obsolescence. Finally and most importantly computer should decide from options of results from its knowledge bank.

What would be the benefits we will be enjoying in few years, after IBM’s dream becomes real? I leave this question for you, fill up the comment form below with your views.

In my perception, the answer for above question is, “Humans are rationally irrational, while these systems are irrationally rational”. IBM believes their dreamt computers can really help in making decision for problems, especially in places where ego and other humanly factors deteriorate the outcomes.

But I personally feel, “As the human thoughts are not bound by logic, it has the extraordinary and naturally inherited capability of innovating and inventing. In history, almost all the big decisions were made by great legends doesn’t solely depend on the logics and knowledge they had, it’s because of something like intuitions/inner voice, gut feelings, faith in God, hope and the list extends and ends with daring to take risk.

Google’s Augmented Reality Glasses – Project Glass

Google recently revealed one of its futuristic work of its augmented reality glasses, officially named as ‘Project Glass’. So far, this project is developed in secret Google lab called Google X. Earlier in past week (Apr, 4) Google revealed it’s intriguing project on the Project Glass’s Google Plus Page. Until now this is the first and only source and official acceptance by Google. According to the post by Google, the page shares the further improvement on the project at the same time to collect the idea of the followers through the comments.

The Post has 5 picture that explains how this technology could like when it will be released in the future, and a demonstration video.  There is no other official data is there for us to know more about this technology. So we have to rely on the latest rumors and guesses of our own.

Based on rumors, the glasses has abilities to connect to the wireless network probably on 4G. Once it was said it has some gesture controls that includes shaking of heads, but the video released by Google proves it has gesture controls but not in form of shaking heads and for surprise it also supported by speech recognition.

These Glasses are going to run on Android obviously( version unknown ). I assume that the Glasses to work it has to connect to a android phone and the phone takes all processing jobs while the Glasses still acts like a external interface for both input and output.    So it needs high processing power in terms of mobile devices and Android with major tweaks, which will be released soon after the Google’s Glasses reaches consumer’s hands.

Since past decade very few trails has been made on innovating a wearable computers. One of them is Pranav Mistry’s 6th Sense Technology. Google’s Glass is not a paradigm shift, its just a improvised idea of the fore mentioned innovation. 6th sense has projector which projects the interface screen on the objects in the environment, say wall or building, Google instead uses the wearable spectacles as the projector. Google also adds the power of web and cloud computing to this Glasses in means of Navigation assistance and with other features you may admire.

Google’s Glasses binds both the real world and virtual world together, wearing it all the day people won’t have to sacrifice one for another, you can co exist in both world. Anyways assumptions and rumors won’t answer all the questions clearly, there are still some unanswered doubts like where is the batter placed? how long it lasts? what is the connectivity it uses to connect with phones? is the glasses are reliable as it seems very light? how do the consumers wear this glass who already wears one as a aid? how the speech recognition feature differentiate the commands and normal talking? and much more, more more.

C and C++ Native Codes, Now Runs In Google Chrome

Google Chrome supports C and C++. Google lately added the Native Client (NaCL) technology to Chrome’s latest version which can execute native C/C++ compiled code inside the browser. HTML5, JavaScript, CSS3 are the programming equipments powered the web (client side) so far, now the list incremented with C and C++.

Why native code is needed for web now? Web and Cloud based computing are more popular today, lets take the example of any online text editor like Google Docs (docs.google.com) or Microsoft’s Docs.com, you can see that those programs are running in your browser, and computes the data locally and then updates it to the server. To build a program that can run in browser the only available programming language is JavaScript. Coding in JavaScript is a very difficult task for programmers. So if the browser supports any other language like C/C++ or Java, the programmers leverage on it to develop applications. Programming in native language is much easier than coding in JavaScript.

How it works? A programmer writes his application in C/C++ and the code is compiled. Now the compiled code is downloaded by the browser and runs in the same. Browser can not run the C/C++ code, here comes the NaCl, in which the program is executed. So more or less this online application works like a desktop application. Refer NaCl developer site.

Next is, interface. The program runs in NaCl and GUI designed in HTML, CSS, and JS rendered in the browser, these two sets are connected by an API called Pepper. The message passing between the web page and Native program running in NaCl are handled by Pepper. NaCl is the chemical formula for Sodium Chloride, which is nothing but a normal table Salt. So its salt and pepper combination makes this working.

Google says that NaCl will be available for every other browsers and in near future it is going to support more languages. NaCl Developer site and Google Code page has NaCl SDK, Demos, C++ tutorials etc.

Apple’s Co-Founder Steve Jobs Died At The Age Of 56

According to a statement released by Apple this Oct 5th, co-founder and former CEO, Steve Jobs has died.

The Next iPhone Is Not The 5, It’s The 4S!

Well Apple new CEO unveiled his first product for the company on October 4th, and it is an iPhone. Everyone including us was speculating for an revelutionary change in the phone but Apple just went into the next edition of  iPhone 4 the iPhone 4S. When the conference ended everyone was hoping there was more but all our thoughts went in vain. FOX NEWS just said ” We don’t want an another iPhone 4 ” and that was the saying of all other visitor and fans of Apple.

But clearly on the bright side Apple went guns blazing on the techie side of the product from it’s predecessor. And yes we do get an Dual Core A5 processor in the iPhone 4S. Well Samsung reign is in an wobbly shape after this. The new phone also gets an revamped iOS and it is the iOS 5. There are too much changes to this phone but its all technical. It is an new phone with an old form factor.

Near Field Communication – The Near Future Communication Trend

NFC or ‘Near Field Communication’, allows simplified transactions, data exchange, and wireless connections between two devices in close proximity to each other. That is, A wireless connection is made by bringing two NFC enabled devices near to each other, usually the distance between them is no more than 20 centimeters approx. A device with embedded NFC chip can make use of this technique to send encrypted data to a short distance. This is expected to be used widely in the near future.

How NFC Works?

NFC works on the basic principle of magnetic induction, in other terms it uses electromagnetism. NFC is the extension of other contact less communication technologies that includes RFID ( Radio Frequency IDentification) tags. A NFC chip which acts as a reader emits a small electric current, which creates a magnetic field, that in turn bridges physical space between the devices. That field is received by a similar coil in the client device, where it is turned back into electrical impulses to communicate data such as identification number, status information, or any other information.

“Active NFC tags” uses their own power source to respond to the reader, while the “Passive NFC tags” uses the energy received from the reader to encode their response.

NFC works for very short range of distance, Like RFID, it works in the 13.56MHz radio frequency spectrum, using less than 15mA of power to communicate data over distances that are usually far less than 20cm. Tags typically store between 96 and 512 bytes of data and transfer data using at speeds of 106Kb/s, 212Kb/s, 424Kb/s or 848Kb/s – enough to move small pieces of information virtually instantaneously.

NFC Ecosystem

Now most of the smart phones features NFC. NFC can be used for transmitting the configuration settings like bluetooth pairing between two mobiles by just bringing the two mobiles together, Wifi configuration setting may transferred to your laptop of any other wifi enabled devices by tapping the phone on the wifi router. Here you can see that NFC is used only to transfer such small file like configuration settings, further the communication is carried out by the corresponding technology, wifi, bluetooth or any other.

NFC enables phones can act as a virtual wallet for users. You can pay your bus fare just waving your smart phone to the NFC enabled device in the bus, at PoS (Point of Sale) after shopping, instead of swiping your credit card, you just wave your smartphone by bringing it nearer to the device, as your cell phone transfer your credit card details to it. Say, for the purchase of more than 100$, the machine ask you to enter some transaction password, you directly enter it in you phone’s screen, then NFC transmit the detail to the processing machine.

NFC can also serve as a key card, smart card and ID card for the users. Passive NFC tags in the smart posters capable of transferring the details to NFC smartphones, where the detail contains information about the movie or program, ticket booking details, etc.

List of Phones that has NFC feature expands with Google’s Nexus One, Samsung Galaxy S II, Nokia C7. In near future almost all the devices is going to feature NFC in it.

The NFC Forum members list includes LGNokiaHuaweiHTCMotorolaNECRIMSamsungSony EricssonToshibaAT&T,SprintRogersSKGoogleMicrosoftPayPalVisaMastercardAmerican ExpressIntelTIQualcomm, and NXP. Among this list of Giants who where supporting NFC, NXG and Sony are the co-inventors of NFC.

Graphics With Unlimited Detail Is On Developement

3D graphics have for many years now are made from polygons, flat shapes fitted together to form objects. There have been some experiments with other approaches as well, but for the most part, polygons were seen as the way forward. New consoles and graphics cards were marketed based around how many polygons they could push around the screen at once, and it looked like the industry had settled on a good solution.

Enter an Australian company called Euclideon, who were unconvinced that polygons were the future. Last year, they decided to work on a fundamental reimagining of how graphics were drawn. Taking inspiration from the world of scientific and medical imaging, which uses tiny atoms or “point cloud data” rather than polygons, Euclideon claimed that it could produce a potentially unlimited level of detail in real time.

One year on, Euclideon hasn’t finished its tech, but it has certainly made a huge amount of progress. To demonstrate the power of its system, it’s created a 1 km square island that would be made of 21,062,352,435,000 polygons using conventional drawing methods. By using its proprietary “polygon conversion engine” Euclideon has converted these polygons to a scale of 64 atoms per cubic millimeter — this is small enough for you to be able to zoom right down and look at individual grains of dirt on the ground. All this running at 20fps in software and potentially much higher when taking advantage of specialist graphics hardware.

Euclideon’s technology allows the ability to scan real 3D objects into a virtual world. Previously, this produced models far too high in geometry and polygon counts to be practical for gaming, but the atom-based system of drawing potentially makes for graphics with an unprecedented level of detail.

Euclideon claims that its software development kit will be finished and in the hands of the games industry within the next few months. Only then will we be able to tell if its claim that their system is the “biggest breakthrough since 3D graphics” holds any water, it certainly looks like a potentially exciting development.

Google+ ( The Facebook Killer )

Facebook has been dominant for an long time in the social networking area. There were many that tried to kill Facebook. But none did the job well, even Google’s own Orkut. Google previous attempt on social networking was Orkut it was soo successful in India and Brazil. Then it faded of as many like Friendster, MySpace etc;. Now Google has started it own social networking site to become an Facebook killer. This also one of the sites that actually gives us an belief that it would be an certain Facebook killer.

The new Google+ has many features that looks really promising it is designed around “Circles” that allow users to group people within their social sphere into different categories. Google says that the people you tend to meet up with on Saturday nights, for example, can be grouped into their own category, while parents can be placed into another. You can then decide to share only certain information with different Circles.

In addition, the social service includes a feature called Hangouts that lets you find others who are “hanging out” on the Web. If you decide to join a given hangout, you’ll be able to engage in a video chat with the others there. Google+ also comes with an Instant Upload option that automatically uploads all photos and videos from your phone to your profile. From there, you can decide who to share that content with.

This features are promising and also new to us. Yet still we have to see what happens and Facebook also has its loyal fans as well.

And there is also an rumor that Facebook is also creating some new features up and Mark Zuckerberg has some tricks  in his sleeve. Well we have to look out for in the coming future. Windows 8 The Next Windows Is Announced!

Good news for all Windows users and Microsoft fans. The next installment of Windows Operating System ” Windows 8 ” successor of currently available Windows 7.

The new Windows OS now have over-hauled its GUI to something more of an Tablet or Gaming console GUI. Well this is an great move? Well, Yes it is specifically for Tablets and its really been promising. I wish this OS will merge the distance between the PC and Tablets. This new OS is now being demonstrated only on Tablets so an PC version of this OS is not shown yet.

There is also some rumor that this UI will come to the PC version with the help of Microsoft Console sibling the Kinect camera. If that comes it will be soo easy for some Users who don’t have any OS working knowledge.

Next Generation Gaming Consoles Are In Developement!

Well guys we have been hearing for a while in the about Nintendo’s new console successor to the Wii. It is also been given the name Project Cafe, we ourselves have done some overview in the past. Back then the release dates were not clear, well now Nintendo says it will be released on spring 2012.

Well, when the most selling console company is off the mark saying that they are bringing the next console; Well its rivals Microsoft and Sony also gave up some details of it.

Sony actually revealed the successor to the PlayStation 3 is currently in development at its company’s investor meeting .

Executive vice president and chief financial officer Masaru Kato was asked to explain the rising research and development costs for the company’s fiscal year. “In the game segment, we have the NGP to launch later this year. So we have development expenses to be incurred for this product,” he explained.

“For the home console, the PS3 still has a product life, but this is a platform business, so for the future platform when we will introduce the product I cannot discuss but development work is underway, so the costs are incurred there.”

Meanwhile, Microsoft began hiring for its “next generation console” this past March. No official words from Microsoft thought.

So people start gathering money in your ” Piggy Bank’s”, In E3 we might see some new consoles.
