Get The Light Weight, Low Latent Youtube Experience

Youtube, the monopoly which dominates the internet video service in the WebSphere. Being served with lots of heavy feature, Youtube’s page become little heavy. In a case of viewing a typical video in a Youtube, it’s not loading only with the video we need, comments, featured video, related video results in the right hand side of the page and many more dynamic contents including options to share, etc, etc.

This increases the latency in loading a page. The time taken to load a complete page after you requested it or the time taken to serve the request. This time includes the server response time, network latency and too the time taken by your browser/computer to display it in your screen. Usually it will be few seconds. In my case it is hardly 3 or 4 seconds with a 2 Mbps DSL connection. Sometimes when browsing the Youtube we don’t want the extra feature served with the video stream. Sometimes we need a faster Youtube to browse across. Here is a solution, that Youtube offer.

‘Youtube – Feather’ is a version of Youtube  which intend to decrease the delay as much as possible by not loading the extra content unless it is a must and by using some advanced web techniques.

And ya, one more thing, Feather is still in ‘beta’. You know what ‘beta’ meant. So it may not work with some videos. Here is the page where you can opt-in to try this YouTube Feather. Don’t forget to comment on this here…  ;-)

Google’s New Software To Design HTML5 Animated WebPages

Here is the Google’s new Software to weave a webpage with animations and purely compatible to  latest HTML 5 Standards. If you are a web designer you must have heard about Adobe’s EDGE tools. EDGE is the set of tools and services provided by Adobe for Web Designers to create wonders in HTML 5. “Google Web Designer” is Google’s ‘EDGE tool’.

I had had an hands on with Adobe’s Creative Cloud services, especially with EDGE Animate and EDGE Code. And now playing with ‘Google Web Designer’ for the last few days. In my view it’s a replica of EDGE tools, nothing more. As of now I am not working on any HTML 5 projects, just playing with features. It got all the basic features to create a animations, but the options are little low when compared to Adobe’s. You can notice some insignificant bugs if you are using the current beta versions of GWD.

Even though it’s still in its earlier stages, it has to do more things in future to impress the designers. JavaScript editor is also not much impressive. But for naive designers working on HTML 5 animations, it will be too simple, direct (If they worked in other animation softwares) and sleek.

The one wonderful thing GWD offers which Adobe can’t is adding of advertisements to your animations or designs. It supports 3rd party ads through ‘Double Click’ – Google’s publisher service, AdMob -Mobile App based Ad delivery service. Adding them is solid simple and it didn’t involves any code changes.

Google Web Designer is a must try software to convert your imaginations to HTML 5. Caution: It is still in its beta mode, so wait for Google to surprise you soon with new releases and features.

Erase Your Lost Device’s Data Using New ‘Android – Device Manager’

Google added up a feature to its Android Device Manager. So far I used this Web interfaced Android Device Manager for finding my misplaced phone in indoors. With a click of a button from this ADM page my phone makes a loudest sound that it can make from a place where I left it and forgot.

Fortunately I lost it inside my home doors. What if I lost it somewhere else? or what if it is stolen by someone/thief? Sorry to say, it just going to do the same things, rung and if you i am enough to left the internet connection ‘on’ it will give its location. What else you can expect? thief’s name?

In those cases I may not able to seize my phone back, but it would nice if the sensitive information in the phone is secured. Here is the new option you get from Android Device Manager. Either you can change the screen lock code, so that the person who took won’t have access to your data, else you can completely wipe phone’s data. That is a complete factory reset, triggered remotely.

This is to work perfect, your phone is needed to be connected to internet. I guess, even though it is not connected to internet when you trigger the process remotely, it will execute in device soon after it is connected.

This definitely going to raise some privacy concern, but no one is going to deny this feature. I prefer trusting Google’s service in this rather losing my data to some thief.

Google’s New Cloud Storage – Google Drive

A few weeks before, Google starts providing it’s cloud storage service in the name of ‘Google Drive’. In fact, Google is providing the cloud storage for us since long ago, even before the word ‘cloud’ comes to fame. Google’s online document editor Google Docs has 1 GB of cloud storage, Picassa – the Google’s online image storing and editing service gives another 1 GB of storage for saving your photos on the cloud & some other services like blogspot & plus has unlimited storage.

In the stream Google includes 5 GB of storage for every user in it’s new storage service called ‘Google Drive’. Google Drive is a online (cloud) storage space in which a Google user may store up to 5 GB of data for free, and you can buy more storage space if you need. Primarily Google Drive replaces the storage space of Google Docs’ 1 GB, while the Gmail storage space increased from 7 GB to 10 GB few weeks ago.

The main feature of Drive is Synchronizing across computers, the data in your Google Drive is automatically synced to your computing devices’ Google Drive folder. (Desktop, Notebooks, Smartphones) provided the required Google Drive software installed on those devices.

Drive supports more than 30 file types with the capability of editing through online, that includes Adobe’s Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. As Google Docs replaced by Google Drive, Drive holds all the features of Docs like online collaboration, sharing documents, etc,.

Google Drive is far better in many ways when compared to Apple’s iCloud, DropBox, SkyDrive. Especially if you are using Google’s other services like Plus, Gmail, etc,. Single file size limit for Google Drive is 10 GB while iCloud and DropBox are in MBs. For your information, Microsoft’s SkyDrive provides 7 GB of free storage with single file size limit of 2 GB.

Currently I have few hundred MBs of files in my Google Drive and it is always synced to my Desktop and my Ultrabook. Based on my few weeks experience, I hope Google Drive will fulfill your anticipation.

Google’s Augmented Reality Glasses – Project Glass

Google recently revealed one of its futuristic work of its augmented reality glasses, officially named as ‘Project Glass’. So far, this project is developed in secret Google lab called Google X. Earlier in past week (Apr, 4) Google revealed it’s intriguing project on the Project Glass’s Google Plus Page. Until now this is the first and only source and official acceptance by Google. According to the post by Google, the page shares the further improvement on the project at the same time to collect the idea of the followers through the comments.

The Post has 5 picture that explains how this technology could like when it will be released in the future, and a demonstration video.  There is no other official data is there for us to know more about this technology. So we have to rely on the latest rumors and guesses of our own.

Based on rumors, the glasses has abilities to connect to the wireless network probably on 4G. Once it was said it has some gesture controls that includes shaking of heads, but the video released by Google proves it has gesture controls but not in form of shaking heads and for surprise it also supported by speech recognition.

These Glasses are going to run on Android obviously( version unknown ). I assume that the Glasses to work it has to connect to a android phone and the phone takes all processing jobs while the Glasses still acts like a external interface for both input and output.    So it needs high processing power in terms of mobile devices and Android with major tweaks, which will be released soon after the Google’s Glasses reaches consumer’s hands.

Since past decade very few trails has been made on innovating a wearable computers. One of them is Pranav Mistry’s 6th Sense Technology. Google’s Glass is not a paradigm shift, its just a improvised idea of the fore mentioned innovation. 6th sense has projector which projects the interface screen on the objects in the environment, say wall or building, Google instead uses the wearable spectacles as the projector. Google also adds the power of web and cloud computing to this Glasses in means of Navigation assistance and with other features you may admire.

Google’s Glasses binds both the real world and virtual world together, wearing it all the day people won’t have to sacrifice one for another, you can co exist in both world. Anyways assumptions and rumors won’t answer all the questions clearly, there are still some unanswered doubts like where is the batter placed? how long it lasts? what is the connectivity it uses to connect with phones? is the glasses are reliable as it seems very light? how do the consumers wear this glass who already wears one as a aid? how the speech recognition feature differentiate the commands and normal talking? and much more, more more.

Finally the Glass is expected to be priced $200 to $250 and planned to be released last quarter of this year. If you have enjoyed this article share your thoughts in comment box below.

Google & Microsoft Pays It’s Users For Sharing Browsing Details

Google’s new program ‘Screenwise’ pays it’s users who using Chrome and are willing to share their browsing details with Google by installing a typical Chrome extension. The payment is in the form of Amazon Gift cards, while still Amazon is not partnering in this. It has became a debatable topic that Google introduces this program after a dramatic changes in it’s privacy policy. You may have noticed this privacy policy change by a bubbling notifications comes around all the Google’s service like Gmail, Youtube etc while you signing in.

According to the ‘Screenwise Panel’ page, Google pays $5 for signing up for this program and additional $5 for every three months for sticking with it. So over all, $25 offer for compromising your internet privacy by sharing your browsing activities with Google. Browser activities includes, pages you visit, timing details like how long you stayed in the page, and I am not sure, but it seems it also includes tracking of your mouse movements and clicks.

You may sign up for this in Google’s Screen wise Page, anyways, for now Google holds the new signups but soon you may see a registration form or ‘kind of’ in that location.

Bing Rewards

Lately I got to know Bing is running similar program to collect data from user, known as “Bing Rewards” which is available only for US territory users. Bing with Amazon Gift cards also has it’s own way of paying back the users in terms of subscriptions for online services like XBox live memberships etc,. Like Chrome extension for Screenwise, Bing Rewards needs a browser toolbar.

Google ScreenWise vs Microsoft Bing Rewards

It seems Bing Rewards($40) pay more than Google ScreenWise, but only if you participate daily. Google can pay up to $25 per year at max, but the rules are flexible, for example you can deactivate the plugin if you don’t want Google to track your particular browsing session.

What Google and Microsoft do with the collected data?

They use the data to find patterns of browsing and other searching patterns, mouse movements and clicks which helps them to optimize their services. Lets say for example, from the collected data Google finds more mouse over movements in the left side of the search result page when compared to the right hand side, then it may help them to decide place the Advertisements on the left side of the page for more conversions (Clicks). Like wise these data may used in lots of ways for improving their services.

Concluding this, not every one attracted to this kind of programs, even though Google or Microsoft is not going to disclose these details to others. If you feel it is worth to share your personal browsing details for $25 or something you may sign up for these programs. Decision is yours, is it worth compromising your privacy?

C and C++ Native Codes, Now Runs In Google Chrome

Google Chrome supports C and C++. Google lately added the Native Client (NaCL) technology to Chrome’s latest version which can execute native C/C++ compiled code inside the browser. HTML5, JavaScript, CSS3 are the programming equipments powered the web (client side) so far, now the list incremented with C and C++.

Why native code is needed for web now? Web and Cloud based computing are more popular today, lets take the example of any online text editor like Google Docs (docs.google.com) or Microsoft’s Docs.com, you can see that those programs are running in your browser, and computes the data locally and then updates it to the server. To build a program that can run in browser the only available programming language is JavaScript. Coding in JavaScript is a very difficult task for programmers. So if the browser supports any other language like C/C++ or Java, the programmers leverage on it to develop applications. Programming in native language is much easier than coding in JavaScript.

How it works? A programmer writes his application in C/C++ and the code is compiled. Now the compiled code is downloaded by the browser and runs in the same. Browser can not run the C/C++ code, here comes the NaCl, in which the program is executed. So more or less this online application works like a desktop application. Refer NaCl developer site.

Next is, interface. The program runs in NaCl and GUI designed in HTML, CSS, and JS rendered in the browser, these two sets are connected by an API called Pepper. The message passing between the web page and Native program running in NaCl are handled by Pepper. NaCl is the chemical formula for Sodium Chloride, which is nothing but a normal table Salt. So its salt and pepper combination makes this working.

Google says that NaCl will be available for every other browsers and in near future it is going to support more languages. NaCl Developer site and Google Code page has NaCl SDK, Demos, C++ tutorials etc.

Google+ ( The Facebook Killer )

Facebook has been dominant for an long time in the social networking area. There were many that tried to kill Facebook. But none did the job well, even Google’s own Orkut. Google previous attempt on social networking was Orkut it was soo successful in India and Brazil. Then it faded of as many like Friendster, MySpace etc;. Now Google has started it own social networking site to become an Facebook killer. This also one of the sites that actually gives us an belief that it would be an certain Facebook killer.

The new Google+ has many features that looks really promising it is designed around “Circles” that allow users to group people within their social sphere into different categories. Google says that the people you tend to meet up with on Saturday nights, for example, can be grouped into their own category, while parents can be placed into another. You can then decide to share only certain information with different Circles.

In addition, the social service includes a feature called Hangouts that lets you find others who are “hanging out” on the Web. If you decide to join a given hangout, you’ll be able to engage in a video chat with the others there. Google+ also comes with an Instant Upload option that automatically uploads all photos and videos from your phone to your profile. From there, you can decide who to share that content with.

This features are promising and also new to us. Yet still we have to see what happens and Facebook also has its loyal fans as well.

And there is also an rumor that Facebook is also creating some new features up and Mark Zuckerberg has some tricks  in his sleeve. Well we have to look out for in the coming future.
