Bloggers vs Monetizing Methods

There are dozens of ways to monetize a blog. Why, because not every method suits for every bloggers. Bloggers in general wants to make money from their blogs, but when it comes to categorization of bloggers based up on their interest, stage, capability they need a specific monetizing methods for each category to suit their needs, which promises the income from their blog.

Lets see the monetizing methods first, most of you may well aware of these

  1. CPC – cost per click
  2. Affiliates – (including CPA – cost per action, CPL – cost per lead)
  3. Ad space selling for particular time (week/month)
  4. CPM – cost per million, CPT – cost per thousand, CPV – cost per visitor/view
  5. Sponsored reviews

When I started to write this article, I was in huge confusion, because I have 2 ways to explain my ideas, one is based on Monetizing methods and anther one is based on blogger categories, finally you are going to read this article based on the monetizing methods, the only reason I chose this way because there is no documented categories of bloggers, which I have in my mind. So you will understand those categories as we go on.

So Which Method Really Suits To Which Blogger

CPC fits for most of the bloggers but not every blogger, because for new, naive, initial bloggers can rely on this method, but not the pros and experienced. At the beginning of blogging, every blogger will receive very low traffic until certain period. This ‘certain’ period stand for the time taken by the blogger to learn or to gain experience in the blogging from his mistakes and stats of his/her blog. In this period of time they have to convert their little traffic in to some countable bucks. For this purpose CPCs like Google Adsense, Chitika and other like programs helps. Certainly without no traffic and influence, move for other methods is not good.

When I say Pros(Professional) and experienced they definitely have a huge subscriber list and followers, that means they are good influential bloggers like ProBlogger.com. If somebody is influential then their recommendations will be respected by their followers who admires them. So In this case they have choice of other monetizing methods but not CPC, because in this method, a blog’s traffic is diverted to another website ( may be a competitors’ ) which a profiled blogger don’t likes.

Affiliate Marketing – A major marketing method in the internet, is a good choice for intermediate bloggers, who has some decent blog traffic. But It needs time to manage your ads/links. If your a part of Google Affiliate, Commission Junction, you felt the difficult in managing your ads over time, what I am trying to say is, this is little bit time consuming and confusing(not in big) process.

CPV, cost per view/visit is a good for highly trafficked blogs. Where CPM, CPT comes under the same method, so the ad space selling for time period is also more or less same to CPV. Sponsored Reviews, last major method to monetize a blog, but definitely not least. This opportunity comes only for some good niche blogs. You have ultimate benefits over this method, you have a post, you earned some good money, you may avoid bunch of ads blinking ugly all over your blog. But to choose this method you need to be successful first, that is your readers should trust you, your sponsors should trust you, most probably you should be best in your niche.

Adsense – Ad Placement Risks

Most of the blogger s rely on Google Adsense for monetizing their blogs. If you are a blogger with Adsense ads running on your blogs you may continue reading this. Every blogger believe that Adsense is a good start for making money from their blog. Adsense has many advantages and they includes

  1. ad management free (ads are served related to your posts)
  2. real time tracking (google tracks the clicks for us)
  3. speed of serving (that won’t affects the speed of loading of your blog pages)

with these advantages Adsense is a good way to make money from your blogs. But the crucial part is ad placements. Blogger s always wants to place the ads where the readers often sees and where the conversion is high. This article is a discussion of pros and cons of Adsense placements.

Risk Of Placing Ads below the blog Title

In majority of the blogs this is usual because this place has high heat rate of conversion, especially for medium rectangle (300×250) and large rectangle (386×280) text ads.

Risk 1

For every blog, traffic is a major key for monetizing. In this strategy of ad placing, there is more chance your readers click on the ad links and leave your blog, that means your bounce rate increases even though your blog traffic is high. So you lose considerable amount of credibility of your blog post, which results in losing email subscribers or rss readers.

Risk 2

You may worked hard in optimizing your blog for search engines, and succeeding in that you may got a descent traffic, then there is chance of losing a loyal reader by diverting him to the ad which is quite attractive below your post title.

Risk 3

What if the published ads are belongs to a competitive blog or site which is promoting the same niche that your blog promotes, what if that blog is better than yours, the reader may end up in sticking to the new blog and forgets your blog.

Alternative – Place the ads at the bottom at the end of the post. This too has considerable conversion rate. People will read your full blog post without any deviation will be your loyal readers and who needs further more inquiry about the topic will click on the ads. Simple logic. This works for me for very long time.

Risk of Placing Ads in Right top area

Psychologically more than 90% of the blog readers are driven to this area by default. This is why most of the websites has ‘sign up, sign in, subscribe’ form here. And the portion that is visible after a page freshly loads, i.e. approx height of 800 to 1000px of the right column is very very crucial.This area is a major conversion area at the same time it has its equivalent cons.


Readers may deviated as like the same happened in the placements below the title. Readers after visiting two of your blog posts never see this area afterwards, this is called ad-blindness. This spot is good for new visitors but works very bad for the frequent visitors.

Alternative – You may use this area for e-mail subscription form, follow me on twitter & facebook links, about me. These are the things which is needed for a new visitor but not for the frequent ones. You can place any other animated ads below the height of 800px from top to attract your readers, because animated ads most of the time performs good in this area.

Text vs Image/Rich Media ads

In my experience Both text and Image ads performs better. But for content rich sites which has more links and for sites which runs classifieds and dynamic contents text ads formated to fit the design of the page performs better than image ads.

Finally Placements and Types of ads varies to every blog according to the layout and design, don’t seek for advice in choosing this. A little research and past experience will help you in choosing the type and size, if you don’t have idea go for image ads, in future you can shift according to your research results. Use Adsense channels to compare the performance of your ad placements with your site analytics data.
