What is RSS?

Most commonly expanded as Really Simple Syndication or some times as Rich Site Summary. RSS delivers frequently changing web content to the users or whoever wants to be updated. Many news-related sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed.

RSS is a standardized format of web feed, which includes full or summarized data, plus meta data information like date published, authorship, etc which allows the user or feed reader to stay updated with the changes made in the web resources. The format is usually coded in xml and any one can start feed, podcast, or atom. Podcast, atom are the services similar to rss which forms web feed family.

To read feeds you need an aggregator (usually referred as ‘feed reader’ ‘rss reader’) which can be “web based” or “desktop based” or any other internet devices like mobile, ipad, etc,. For “desktop based” aggregator you need to install it in your desktop, some of them are Amphetadesk, FeedReader, NewsGator. For “web based” there are many feed aggregation or reader service present widely in internet in which Google Reader, Bloglines, My Yahoo are notable.

To be updated with your list of specific websites or web resources(audio, video or any other files) you have to just add the feed URI to the feed reader or just simply click the rss icon( mostly in orange color with curves in it ) in the site you want to follow. Whenever you open your reader it aggregates all the feeds or updates of the sites you following.

Now you can follow and stay up to date with your desired websites. RSS is simply brings all your favorite sites to one place called reader instead of you go and check every website.
