Get The Light Weight, Low Latent Youtube Experience

Youtube, the monopoly which dominates the internet video service in the WebSphere. Being served with lots of heavy feature, Youtube’s page become little heavy. In a case of viewing a typical video in a Youtube, it’s not loading only with the video we need, comments, featured video, related video results in the right hand side of the page and many more dynamic contents including options to share, etc, etc.

This increases the latency in loading a page. The time taken to load a complete page after you requested it or the time taken to serve the request. This time includes the server response time, network latency and too the time taken by your browser/computer to display it in your screen. Usually it will be few seconds. In my case it is hardly 3 or 4 seconds with a 2 Mbps DSL connection. Sometimes when browsing the Youtube we don’t want the extra feature served with the video stream. Sometimes we need a faster Youtube to browse across. Here is a solution, that Youtube offer.

‘Youtube – Feather’ is a version of Youtube  which intend to decrease the delay as much as possible by not loading the extra content unless it is a must and by using some advanced web techniques.

And ya, one more thing, Feather is still in ‘beta’. You know what ‘beta’ meant. So it may not work with some videos. Here is the page where you can opt-in to try this YouTube Feather. Don’t forget to comment on this here…  ;-)

Convert Image/PDF/Scanned Documents to Text/Word Document with Google Drive

Ever you tried to convert a scanned or cam captured document(.jpg, .pdf, .gif, etc) in to a text/word (editable) document. This can be achieved with the technique called OCR (Optical Character Recognition). You might have come across various pdf to word, image to word conversion online services and software. Some may work well, but here is an option you can not left out trying.

This option is known to most of the Google Drive users. When you try to upload a document in to your online Drive, it should ask you whether to “convert uploaded files to Google Docs format” or “convert the text from uploaded PDF or image files”. If it is not asking do the following.

  1. Go to drive.google.com (sign-in)
  2. Go to settings (In top-right side, you can find it with an ‘gear’ icon)
  3. In the drop down select “Upload Settings”
  4. Check “confirm settings before each upload”

That’s all. Now you are ready to use Google’s OCR to convert your scanned/image files into a text document. Just upload the file you need to change, and check your online drive after few seconds.

The efficiency is 99% in my experience, but you can’t expect all the diagrams, lines, tables to be converted as it is. That’s the only difference between other premium conversion techniques.

What Else You Can Do In GMail?

World’s largest email service provider GMail has many more intriguing things around it which you might not heard before. These are experimental new features of GMail brought you through ‘GMail Labs‘. This post might not suit for people who access their mail through ‘e-mail clients’. As already said, these are experimental features, but works good (at least most of the time for me).

Okay Lets start with this,

  1. Click the gear icon in the upper right, then select Settings.
  2. Select the ‘Labs’ tab and identify the labs you want to enable. Click the ‘Enable’ radio button to turn on a lab and click ‘Save Changes’ at the bottom of the page. Your page may refresh but after the refresh, the lab you just turned on will be available in Gmail.

Now, You don’t need any guidelines further. Anyways here I list my favorite features which I using with my accounts. These features may vary any time and even may not be available at the time you read this.

Google+ ( The Facebook Killer )

Facebook has been dominant for an long time in the social networking area. There were many that tried to kill Facebook. But none did the job well, even Google’s own Orkut. Google previous attempt on social networking was Orkut it was soo successful in India and Brazil. Then it faded of as many like Friendster, MySpace etc;. Now Google has started it own social networking site to become an Facebook killer. This also one of the sites that actually gives us an belief that it would be an certain Facebook killer.

The new Google+ has many features that looks really promising it is designed around “Circles” that allow users to group people within their social sphere into different categories. Google says that the people you tend to meet up with on Saturday nights, for example, can be grouped into their own category, while parents can be placed into another. You can then decide to share only certain information with different Circles.

In addition, the social service includes a feature called Hangouts that lets you find others who are “hanging out” on the Web. If you decide to join a given hangout, you’ll be able to engage in a video chat with the others there. Google+ also comes with an Instant Upload option that automatically uploads all photos and videos from your phone to your profile. From there, you can decide who to share that content with.

This features are promising and also new to us. Yet still we have to see what happens and Facebook also has its loyal fans as well.

And there is also an rumor that Facebook is also creating some new features up and Mark Zuckerberg has some tricks  in his sleeve. Well we have to look out for in the coming future. If u have any suggestion how Google+ should be do comment below. Follow me on twitter on http://twitter.com/#!/Sudharshan_Hi5

YouTube Is Soon Rolling Out Movie Rentals

Google’s video streaming website YouTube is set to unveil its movie rental feature in the near future. This is more of anticipated like the well acknowledged company in this field Netflix. Yet, Netflix is not available in most of the countries in the world and if Google actually delivers it to all of the audiences then we might have some competition on this field also.

After this announcement many m0ovie making giants like Sony Pictures, Warner Brothers and Universal agreed to this statement and will allow their content to be rented on YouTube.

Well on the downside Paramount Pictures and 20th Century Fox Group did not want to rent their movies on YouTube because YouTube has more pirated content on their website and Google in its search engine displays websites that stream pirated movies. Well I will say that just give the people more options at an quality price. There is no information on its release date and pricing for renting movies.

Be sure to tell us what do you think of this feature will this stop movie piracy? or will it stir the things up a more by commenting below.

FireFox 4 Release – “Largest Number Of Software Downloads In 24 Hours”

Mozilla sets an release date for the latest Firefox 4. FireFox 4 was originally projected to release around October and November of the last year. After 12 ‘beta’s and 1 ‘release candidate’ Firefox 4 is releasing tomorrow(22nd March). Firefox 4 which took nearly a year to develop now comes with the hardware acceleration, where chrome has partial hardware acceleration and latest MS’s Internet Explorer got complete acceleration control over the GPUs.

Mozilla Firefox 4 is one of the biggest releases of the browser to come till date, and signals an even grater change for Mozilla as it embraces a tighter schedule driven release cycle. 22nd March, 2011 will be the important day in Mozilla’s calendar.

Firefox once broke the Guinness world record of “Largest number of software downloads in a day” with 8 million Firefox 3 downloads in a day. Microsoft’s latest browser IE 9 only got 2.3 million hits in its first day, and it is expected that FF4 will be downloaded by 10 million before the end of the day.

Firefox is 6 times faster than its predecessor and with optimal performance which can beat its competitor like chrome and opera. The new and fresh look with sleek design and compact buttons, moved up tab bars with dual-duty address bars are the notables of FF4.

Panorama is the feature that FF only has, used to arrange the tabs in form of groups and in order, with the basic mouse function over the panoramic graphics utility. Improved security and privacy promised by Firefox is always a plus point.

Killer feature of Firefox sync allows you to access your browser history literally over anywhere with any device installed firefox. Firefox sync as a cloud stored web history, stored not in your computer, instead stored online which can be accessed across the world with a username and password.

So, if you are a firefox fan you can download the ‘release candidate’ now or else you can directly down the complete release version tomorrow. If you are new to firefox, I bet you’ll like it than any other. Firefox is now multi platform which is now available for Mac, Windows & Linux.
