IBM’s 5 in 5–Giving Senses To Computers

‘”5 in 5”, does it make any sense? No??. Actually it gives sense. Recently IBM announced the future of cognitive computing, i.e. equipping computers/smart-phones with 5 senses with in 5 years from now. In short 5 in 5. Those 5 senses were obviously

  1. Sight
  2. Touch
  3. Hearing
  4. Smell
  5. Taste

What would happen if the computers can sense the above in future? No this is not the right question we have to ask here. In today’s world, with the plethora of sensors capable of reading ample parameters in almost all areas found by human, sensing things are not an exciting one to hear. So what IBM is going to concentrate here is processing the senses, that is ‘cognition to computers’. Without a brain, all the things sensed through our five sensory organs are utterly a futile chemical reactions over our nerves. It’s equivalent to a person in coma.

So sensing needs ‘cognition’, that paves way to ‘Recognition’. Here recognition for computers is achieved by processing the sensed things, that may be sight or touch or any of the other senses stated above, and yes this includes all probability of combinations. Here is the quote from Bernard Meyerson’s (Chief Innovation Officer, IBM) article, which I feel conveys the goal of “5 in 5” better.

Today, if you put a robotic track inspector in a railroad tunnel and equipped it with a video camera, it would not know what to make of an oncoming train. But what if you enabled it to sense things more like  humans do–not just vision from the video camera but the ability to detect the rumble of the train and the whoosh of air? And what if you enabled it to draw inferences from the evidence that it observes, hears and feels? That would be one smart computer–a machine that would be able to get out of the way before the train smashed into it.

The action of moving away from the track if train comes is triggered by the result of intelligence. Intelligence is the ability of acquiring and applying knowledge. Certainly it is not possible to fill in computer’s memory with billions of lines of code, in order to load the knowledge for all situations and conditions that are not predictable at the time of coding.

When we talk about giving senses and brain like human to computers, then the same paradigm should be followed for imparting knowledge to computer. That’s ‘Artificial Intelligence’, learning from past, learning from mistakes, learning from success, and it should learn till its obsolescence. Finally and most importantly computer should decide from options of results from its knowledge bank.

What would be the benefits we will be enjoying in few years, after IBM’s dream becomes real? I leave this question for you, fill up the comment form below with your views.

In my perception, the answer for above question is, “Humans are rationally irrational, while these systems are irrationally rational”. IBM believes their dreamt computers can really help in making decision for problems, especially in places where ego and other humanly factors deteriorate the outcomes.

But I personally feel, “As the human thoughts are not bound by logic, it has the extraordinary and naturally inherited capability of innovating and inventing. In history, almost all the big decisions were made by great legends doesn’t solely depend on the logics and knowledge they had, it’s because of something like intuitions/inner voice, gut feelings, faith in God, hope and the list extends and ends with daring to take risk.

Google & Microsoft Pays It’s Users For Sharing Browsing Details

Google’s new program ‘Screenwise’ pays it’s users who using Chrome and are willing to share their browsing details with Google by installing a typical Chrome extension. The payment is in the form of Amazon Gift cards, while still Amazon is not partnering in this. It has became a debatable topic that Google introduces this program after a dramatic changes in it’s privacy policy. You may have noticed this privacy policy change by a bubbling notifications comes around all the Google’s service like Gmail, Youtube etc while you signing in.

According to the ‘Screenwise Panel’ page, Google pays $5 for signing up for this program and additional $5 for every three months for sticking with it. So over all, $25 offer for compromising your internet privacy by sharing your browsing activities with Google. Browser activities includes, pages you visit, timing details like how long you stayed in the page, and I am not sure, but it seems it also includes tracking of your mouse movements and clicks.

You may sign up for this in Google’s Screen wise Page, anyways, for now Google holds the new signups but soon you may see a registration form or ‘kind of’ in that location.

Bing Rewards

Lately I got to know Bing is running similar program to collect data from user, known as “Bing Rewards” which is available only for US territory users. Bing with Amazon Gift cards also has it’s own way of paying back the users in terms of subscriptions for online services like XBox live memberships etc,. Like Chrome extension for Screenwise, Bing Rewards needs a browser toolbar.

Google ScreenWise vs Microsoft Bing Rewards

It seems Bing Rewards($40) pay more than Google ScreenWise, but only if you participate daily. Google can pay up to $25 per year at max, but the rules are flexible, for example you can deactivate the plugin if you don’t want Google to track your particular browsing session.

What Google and Microsoft do with the collected data?

They use the data to find patterns of browsing and other searching patterns, mouse movements and clicks which helps them to optimize their services. Lets say for example, from the collected data Google finds more mouse over movements in the left side of the search result page when compared to the right hand side, then it may help them to decide place the Advertisements on the left side of the page for more conversions (Clicks). Like wise these data may used in lots of ways for improving their services.

Concluding this, not every one attracted to this kind of programs, even though Google or Microsoft is not going to disclose these details to others. If you feel it is worth to share your personal browsing details for $25 or something you may sign up for these programs. Decision is yours, is it worth compromising your privacy?

IPv4 Is Running Out and Soon To Be Gone, This Is Time For IPv6

IPv4 address exhaustion is the exhaustion of pool of unallocated IPv4 addresses. These address spaces are managed by IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) under this five RIRs (Regional Internet Registries) are responsible managing IP address space in their corresponding territories. Among the five RIRs, ‘Asia-Pacific’ depleted all of its IP address space on April 15th, 2011 except a small fraction of addresses held reserved for some new start up network operators.

Based on the estimation, the exhaustion of remaining RIRs are expected to deplete of its pool in coming few years. So its time for IPv6, the long anticipated upgrade to internet protocol. IPv6 is going to be the next widely deployed IP version after IPv4. IPv6 uses 128 bit addresses to provide address space of 2128 (approximately 340 undecillion or 3.4×1038) addresses while IPv4 uses only 32 bit addresses.

So according to the numbers, IPv6 can virtually provide unlimited addresses to upcoming world of internet. After the migration to IPv6 the efficiency of routing increases by eliminating Network Address Translation, and the flexibility of addressing new devices also increases because of the wide availability of addresses.

As the depletion nears, this will put more pressure on the internet service providers and network operators to begin transitioning their networks and routing devices to support IPv6.

YouTube Is Soon Rolling Out Movie Rentals

Google’s video streaming website YouTube is set to unveil its movie rental feature in the near future. This is more of anticipated like the well acknowledged company in this field Netflix. Yet, Netflix is not available in most of the countries in the world and if Google actually delivers it to all of the audiences then we might have some competition on this field also.

After this announcement many m0ovie making giants like Sony Pictures, Warner Brothers and Universal agreed to this statement and will allow their content to be rented on YouTube.

Well on the downside Paramount Pictures and 20th Century Fox Group did not want to rent their movies on YouTube because YouTube has more pirated content on their website and Google in its search engine displays websites that stream pirated movies. Well I will say that just give the people more options at an quality price. There is no information on its release date and pricing for renting movies.

Be sure to tell us what do you think of this feature will this stop movie piracy? or will it stir the things up a more by commenting below.

Apple Is Tracking Your Location With The Help Of Its Mobile Devices

Yes, recently it has been come to know that Apple can track your locations with the help of your iPhone’s and iPad’s. How? Because they have actually built the device with an tracker into it. This has offended many people that are using Apple’s products. Hey! everyone does needs some privacy here and there. So this actually caused an lot of issues and Mr. Jobs is questioned again for this problem and well, he started defending his company for it.

Jobs admitted in a New York Times interview Wednesday that the storing of location data was a mistake, but said the company wasn’t keeping tabs on its customers.

And Jobs said;

“We haven’t been tracking anybody,” Jobs said. “Never have. Never will.”

In a press release, Apple said that it didn’t receive location data for iPhone and iPad users, but rather signals from nearby Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers. The maps showing customer location history was called “a bug” that will be fixed in a free iTunes update soon.

The location data, according to Apple, “helps your iPhone rapidly and accurately calculate its location when requested.” After the update, the data cache will be saved for a maximum of seven days. But many people don’t believe Jobs’ explanation. The attacks against Apple built up quickly in the week following the release of an iPhone Tracker app that showed customers’ location history, including a lawsuit. “South Park” even had fun with it in an episode Wednesday night showing dark-suited men from Apple tracking down Cartman’s iPad and attempt to take his blood.

Well that episode was indeed really funny and sometime kinda make us think like are we being watched by some goofy guys over the internet? Well I sure don’t like to be tracked because I hate being tracked. Do tell us what you think of this misery that Apple created and what should be done by commenting below.

Those who are planning on getting the new White iPhone. Think again.

Why No Flash On Apple Products? Well, Steve Jobs Have Answers

For all these years every one was wondering, why Apple is not supporting Adobe flash on its line up of products? Everyone was criticizing Apple for it. Well its about time to let you know why for all these days they were holding back because Steve Jobs answers to it.

And Adobe recently pointed out that “Apple released a new draft of their iPhone developer program license which  had the effect of restricting applications built with a number of technologies, including Unity, Titanium, MonoTouch, and Flash CS5?.

Then Kevin Lynch, Adobe CTO revealed that they “have already decided to shift our focus away from Apple’s iPhone and iPad devices for both Flash Player and AIR. We are working to bring Flash Player and AIR to all the other major participants in the mobile ecosystem, including Google, RIM, Palm (soon to be HP), Microsoft, Nokia and others.”

Well whatever Adobe or any others say Steve has his own theories and what he said is quoted below.

Steve Jobs says that;

  1. While Adobe’s Flash products are widely available, this does not mean they are open, since they are controlled entirely by Adobe and available only from Adobe. By almost any definition, Flash is a closed system…. Rather than use Flash, Apple has adopted HTML5, CSS and JavaScript – all open standards.
  2. Adobe has repeatedly said that Apple mobile devices cannot access “the full web” because 75% of video on the web is in Flash. What they don’t say is that almost all this video is also available in a more modern format, H.264, and viewable on iPhones, iPods and iPads.
  3. Symantec recently highlighted Flash for having one of the worst security records in 2009. We also know first hand that Flash is the number one reason Macs crash. We have been working with Adobe to fix these problems, but they have persisted for several years now.
  4. To achieve long battery life when playing video, mobile devices must decode the video in hardware; decoding it in software uses too much power. Many of the chips used in modern mobile devices contain a decoder called H.264….Although Flash has recently added support for H.264, the video on almost all Flash websites currently requires an older generation decoder that is not implemented in mobile chips and must be run in software.
  5. Flash was designed for PCs using mice, not for touch screens using fingers. For example, many Flash websites rely on “rollovers”, which pop up menus or other elements when the mouse arrow hovers over a specific spot. Apple’s revolutionary multi-touch interface doesn’t use a mouse, and there is no concept of a rollover.
  6. Flash is a cross platform development tool. It is not Adobe’s goal to help developers write the best iPhone, iPod and iPad apps. It is their goal to help developers write cross platform apps. And Adobe has been painfully slow to adopt enhancements to Apple’s platforms.

Well after myself discovering this made myself into the point of shock, that what he just said was absolutely true. This is why he is one of the greatest presenter in the planet. That’s why people believe and buy whatever he says. Well this is an good point by Steve and tell us your opinion about it by commenting below.

Learning From Most Successful Illiterates

Supply chain is the process of delivering the goods or products from the origin to the point of consumption. Simple aah? but not really as it seems, it involves the integration of information, transportation, inventory, warehousing, material handling, and packaging, and occasionally security, most importantly it should be done with the following three things in your mind,

  1. value of time
  2. space utility
  3. optimal resources

With the advancements and technology in today’s world, we can model, analyze, visualize and optimize this logistics(supply chain) management. But “Indian” Dabbawallas managed to do it successfully since the end of nineteenth century. (Dabbawalla means “launch box delivery man”). Whats so special in this, here is the list of facts show how successful they are,

  • Forbes gave them a six sigma performance rating with 99.9999% correctness, that means only one mistake in 6 million deliveries.
  • Prince Charles, during his visit to India, visited them (he had to fit in with their schedule, since their timing was too precise to permit any flexibility). Prince Charles also invited them to his wedding with Camilla Parker Bowles in London on 9 April 2005.
  • Many Dabbawallas were invited to give ‘Guest Lectures’ in some of the top business schools across the world.
  • Most of the Dabbawallas were illiterates.
  • Till today they uses local train service to transport the food.
  • In average a Dabbawalla travels 60 -70 kms per day.
  • Recyclable food boxes changes hands at least 8 times a day.
  • ufff.. I’m tired, here is the Wikipedia page, or cope up with the following video.

Lets see what the coca-cola people doing today in Africa.

I recently came across a blog post by Melinda Gates (yes wife of Bill Gates) in their Bill & Melinda Gates foundation blog, it really adorable to know that how coke uses the local entrepreneurs and the concept of micro distribution center to reach the remote areas in Kenya(African Country). This is little bit different when compared to Dabbawallas. Even today, the companies in most developed countries couldn’t reach this level of success in logistics but these talented-illiterates did.  If you have any views in this, write a comment at the bottom of this article, lets discuss…

Google Person Finder – Japan Tsunami 2011

This evening Google’s usual search page launched with unusual text very below the search bar. The text is

Tsunami Alert for New Zealand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Hawaii, and others. Waves expected over the next few hours, caused by 8.9 earthquake in Japan.

Google often shows the funny “doodles” for important news and events. Today instead of being funny Google did a great job by displaying the tsunami alert in its home page by breaking its so long followed rule. Tsunami alert after a tremendous earth quake in Japan in Google’s homepage which is viewed by millions in the relevant geographies is a great initiative by Google.

Help them

Google launched person finder to search for the missed ones in this calamity which was listed by various organizations and volunteers. You can access this site at japan.person-finder.appspot.com. Why Does Apple Use The Letter ” i ” In Most Products

Apple has come up with many products in this decade starting with the letter “ i “. It all started from the iPod, iMac, iPhone and the most recent iPad. I have actually done some research to find the meaning for the letter “ i “. But all my efforts lead to an dead end. Then I started to realize that may be Apple might be telling to their consumers and every one about something that they might want to share. Or it might be an code to Apple’s products and I think that we have some what cracked the code. There are several possible codes to go. So I listed them below for what the “ i ” stands for;

Code 1: ” Yes, i stole away your money by selling you an cheap phone.”

Code 2: i really don’t realize how still they are buying our products. ”

Code 3: i do make an fortune out of them.”

Code 4: i really don’t know what is A2DP Bluetooth and 3G support means.”

Code 5: i think that PC should not be owned by everyone in the world.”

Code 6: i say the new trend is to bring out an phone that breaks instantly and doesn’t have network coverage at all.”…..

Sorry but after code 6 it kinda goes dirty.

But codes and fun aside Apple really makes excellent and artistic product that is not been equalized since it came back. So if you guys have some Code up in your sleeves leave it in the comments column. And please do watch the video below and laugh out loud.
